A Special Education Math Teacher - 808 Words

For the last three years, I have worked as a special education math teacher in the facility setting, both in residential treatment, and juvenile corrections. I believe that my work has exemplified the advancement of the values of character, diversity, leadership, and commitment to service. My experiences have also been the driving force that has ultimately led me to seek an education in the field of law. To meet the needs of students in the facility setting and prepare them for success, a teacher must emphasize and embody pro-social character values including integrity, compassion, tolerance, and hard work. The vast majority of students in these settings have found themselves there due to a lack of appropriate role models, resulting in anti-social behaviors. I believe that my success in these settings, which is demonstrated by several awards listed on my rà ©sumà © and my promotion to teacher after two months in a paraprofessional position, is due in part to my strength of character and ability to encourage its development in others. Additionally, because character-building is such an integral part of my job, the values that represent a morally responsible adult have become even more engrained into my decision-making process both personally and professionally. As a special educator, my job has been to embrace diversity where the general education curriculum falls short, and to use it as a tool to develop strength-based approaches to learning. Relationship Between Law and Journalism free essay sample

NAME:didi COURSE: Law RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LAW AND JOURNALISM The establishment of justice does not mean merely the establishment of courts or the machinery for the enforcement of law. It means something far more. It means the establishment of just relations between man and man, between man and his own government, between man, the individual and society. It means the creation of a social state that deals justly with every man and every interest of man. This may not be done by the profession of law alone. To establish justice, the cooperation of the members of other professions and of those engaged in other occupations is necessary. Most important, it is the cooperation of those engaged in the profession of journalism. For journalism, though not the only medium of expression of public opinion, is the chief medium for such expression, and public opinion finally determines the establishment of justice. The relation, therefore, between law and journalism should be cooperative, not contradictory; complementary, not conflicting. We will write a custom essay sample on Relationship Between Law and Journalism or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The lawyer is the sworn officer of the court unto society’s welfare; the journalist is the unsworn officer of society unto the common good. Both law and journalism, in their last and final analysis, are professions of public service. There is no other adequate reason for their existence in a social state. Two theories of journalism are held by reputable and high-minded journalists. One theory is that the newspaper, foremost exponent of journalism, has merely the duty to record the news, let its interpretation and its consequences be what they may. The other theory is that with news presentation there should be news interpretation and comment. Either theory makes of the newspaper, in different degree, an instrument for the establishment of justice or injustice. In the one case a newspaper merely furnishes an abstract of the record, and in the other case it becomes advocate and judge. A newspaper should not content itself with merely printing the news, but in the interest of society, it should be an attorney for the people in a real and vital sense. It may not be such an attorney except it interprets and comments upon the news. In this way, it seems a newspaper best justifies the tacit franchise given to it by the public for the public good. Nor does the lawyer do his full duty to his client when he leaves unreckoned and uncared for the interests of society. The lawyer should in a very real and vital sense consider society’s welfare. Criticisms many and various are made upon the courts and lawyer and the machinery set up to establish, in legal ways, justice. All considered criticisms result from a feeling that neither law nor journalism is justifying itself, as it might do, in its relation to present day society. We are told, and with considerable truth, that we have a disorganized judicial system without unity and without adequate effectiveness. Our federal court system lacks the strength and coherence of an organized judiciary. The same is true of our state systems. Frequently judges are not selected for the judicial attainments, but rather for their political strength and affiliations. In many instances judicial qualities have not been the controlling cause in the selection of judges. Until recently, no serious attempt has been made to establish a better administrative organization of courts, and our machinery of the law. The Bar is criticized in this changing age, for its commercialism, and judges and lawyers for venality. The ineffectiveness of the criminal law, largely made by lawyers, is another frequent cause for criticism. Lawyers are accused, and sometimes rightfully, of defeating the ends of justice for the sake of the fees. Judges are accused of incurring personal favor by publicity, of shading their opinions in other than the public interest. While there is truth in all these charges as to some individuals and some systems. Criticism is more properly directed against antiquated systems and irresponsible individuals than against courts in general, or the profession of law. The newspaper as an agent of society seeking to establish justice has, resting upon it, the obligation to denounce such systems, to criticize legal mechanisms that do not accomplish their proper purposes, and individual lawyers and judges who in any way fail in their duties to the public. Such criticism should be welcomed by every honest lawyer and righteous judge. It may not be denied to journalism if journalism is to play its part in establishing justice. Three criticisms are directed against present-day journalism;Newspapers are criticized for such faults as ignorance, cowardice, insincerity, bad taste, slovenly style, triviality, offensive partisanship. These are the inherent imperfections of humanity which lawyers are guilty of t – and judges! Their existence and importance depends upon the personality of editors and publishers. It is far better, however, to have ignorance and slovenliness and triviality and offensive partisanship in a newspaper, that is free to speak its mind, than to put a padlock by law upon the press. The second category of criticisms is against faults that are self-correcting, such as inadequate news service, inaccuracy, blunders, misquotation, faking of news, malice, dishonorable methods in news or business policy, trouble making, pernicious political doctrine, failure to serve worthy causes, betrayal of public interests to personal, political or pecuniary ends. Are not these or similar charges properly leveled against certain individual lawyers and judges? Is there no mote in the lawyer critic’s eye? The unfit newspaper, however, unfit in the eyes of an understanding public, cannot survive indefinitely, nor can the unfit lawyer or the unfit judge. The third class of criticism widely expressed and seriously urged, challenges more serious consideration as we discuss the relation of law to journalism, and both to the establishment of justice. These criticisms have to do with certain definite infringements of the social and moral well-being of the community and of the public at large. They are: (1) The degrading moral effect caused by printing unwholesome details of crime, divorces, scandals and sex stories; (2) the crime-producing effect of sensational publicity in criminal cases through arousing sympathy or admiration for criminals; (3) the direct interference with the administration of justice through unbridled treatment of crime stories, both before and during trials. None of these journalistic offenses is new, any more than the venality and corruption of the judiciary is new. Both perhaps have increased, through changes in our civilization and the increasing complexity of life While it is unquestionably true that unwholesome details of crime, divorces and sex stories may have a degrading moral effect, yet there is no remedy in censorship. It remains always true that the wages of sin is publicity. The chief deterrent against crime is not always or often the legal penalty, but the publicity thereof. The greatest of law books, antedating and surpassing Blackstone and the rest, prints within its pages more crime news and more baldly than would be printed by the most daring newspaper, even in this day of daring. But the Bible prints crime news, not for the sake of circulation nor for the exploitation of the romance of the crime, not at the request of lawyers for the prosecution or defense, to advertise or glorify them, but as a human record serving as a deterrent to more crime. It is here that the interference with justice or rather the promotion of injustice may be criticism justly made against some newspapers. While the omission of news of crime would promote unrighteousness in the land, the presentation of it in the wrong fashion tends to make others guilty of similar offenses. It is not the publishing of the news, but the morally unwholesome presentation thereof which needs to be corrected within, not without the profession of journalism. The grave charge, that which brings directly journalism in its relationship to law, is the so-called interference indirectly or directly with the administration of justice, both before and during trials in courts. This lends itself to more definite regulations through workable methods. An ideal system of administering justice would demand the following policies affecting the press: â€Å"1. When a crime is committed, newspapers should be free to relate all the facts and circumstances of the crime itself, but without adding any editorial conclusions or inferences as to who is guilty. This freedom should extend to publication of the names of persons arre sted, and descriptions of persons for whom warrants have been issued and who cannot be found. Full publicity within these limits tends to the furtherance of justice and aids in the apprehension of prisoners. â€Å"2. After a prisoner is formally charged with the commission of a crime and held to trial, there should be no publicity bearing upon the question of his guilt or innocence. Publicity should be confined to the nature of the charge and the proceedings actually taken. There should be no exploiting of the personality of the accused, whether such exploitation be favorable, unfavorable or neutral. There should be no interviews with the prisoner or his lawyers, with the prosecutor, the police, or any witness, touching the questions of the prisoner’s guilt or evidence to be produced. 3. At the time of trial newspapers should be free to print a straight narrative of the proceedings in open court, either verbatim or condensed. It is impractical to try to put a limit on the length or fullness of such reports, but they can, and should be confined to a straight, colorless narrative – no feature stuff by ‘special writers,’ no interviews or alleged character studies, no state ments that the ‘defense scored heavily’ or that the prosecution ‘dealt a crushing blow to the alibi theory,’ in short, the elimination of all bias, editorial comment and ramatic effects. â€Å"4. After the termination of the case by acquittal or conviction, interviews and comment on the evidence are proper; because fair criticism on the action of judges and juries is necessary from the standpoint of sound public policy. â€Å"The limitation as to discussing evidence and expressing opinions as to guilt before definite charges have been made, should admit of an exception in cases involving official misconduct or unfitness to hold public office. It is necessary, in the public interest, to preserve the right to make public accusation of misconduct in such cases, both to inform the public and to force official action when the proper authorities fail to move. Newspapers therefore should be free to deal with such cases without any restriction except for the ordinary liability for libel in case their assertions are untrue. † It is not within the proper province of journalism to pass upon the guilt or innocence of prisoners at the Bar. What publicity should be given may be and is a debatable question, but certainly in the interest of society, the newspaper should have full privilege to do its duty to the public unhampered by the decisions of those it criticizes. The reputable newspaper is as much concerned with the interest of the public as is the reputable lawyer and the reputable judge. Neither newspaper nor individual should be limited in any way in making criticism upon the action of the court after this action has been taken in proper deliberative way under the forms of law. Freedom of the Press was one of the subjects discussed by Thomas Jefferson in his first inaugural address, and we agree with this great patriot that freedom of the press from all obligations except that of fidelity to the public interests, is vital in our free government. † The news of crime is only a small part and often an exaggerated part of the news of the day. Newspapers must be free to consider in the public interest the acts o f lawyers and judges, as they affect the public outside the field of crime. It is a dangerous doctrine to suggest restriction of such freedom of criticism of public officials, lawyers in the courts, and judges on the Bench. Particularly is it the duty of newspaper to print the news of malfeasance in office and of the unethical acts of those invested by the public with a public trust. The entire legal mechanism, courts and judges and laws and lawyers, must have the confidence and respect of the people before it accomplishes the best results. Confidence and respect may not be obtained where just criticisms are denied or ignored. To that end the lawyer and the journalist alike should make appeal and effort in behalf of higher ethical standards within the professions. There should be a more zealous insistence upon an educated membership. This education should be a firm grounding in the principles of justice and the ethics of the professions more vital to society and to the professions themselves, than schooling in methods, machinery and practice. No man should say or do as a lawyer what he would not say or do as a gentleman, any more than a journalist should write as a journalist what he would not say as a gentleman.

MacTara free essay sample

?Mactara is currently (2007) in a healthy financial position relative to other competitors in the lumber industry. They have stayed profitable amidst an unstable marketplace with their biggest consumer, the United States. This uncertainty is a problem for MacTara and the Canadian softwood lumber trade as a whole. Also, the company has some new equipment that has not been used to its full, profit-maximizing capacity. As consultants to MacTara we will provide alternative strategies for expanding operations, continuing operations, and cutting back/ operations. In order for MacTara to expand its operations and enter into the high profit margin market of value-added wood products they must: 1. Budget costs to increase production a. Quote for current and future international shipping fees b. Quote for re-engineering the kiln c. Quote for new packaging plant d. Quote for outsourcing packaging 2. Consolidate Atlantic region lumber industry a. Ensure high volume of raw materials from numerous smaller suppliers b. We will write a custom essay sample on MacTara or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page End Fibre Agreement with pulp mills 3. Begin implementation of new projects and alliances overseas 4. Increase production and begin entering European market (First-mover mentality) 5. Continuously educate customers on wood energy These are crucial steps (see exhibit C for details) for Mactara to enter the value-added wood product market of wood pellets and softwood decking/flooring. This strategy is most favourable for Mactara because the volume of production is increasing, average costs are decreasing and more emphasis is put on high profit margin products. This approach will also add jobs within MacTara and the Atlantic region. If Mactara decides to continue operations as they currently stand they must acknowledge the volatility of the USD and the unstable trading channels available to them. The main focus using this strategy would be: 1. Constrain production to current and future market demand a. Reduce current production during market slump b. Predict future market demand c. Prepare to increase or decrease production moving forward 2. Lobbying government for emphasis on keeping softwood lumber treaty stable 3. Creating personal relationships with current customers of construction lumber and pellets 4. Honoring current and future pellet contracts This passive approach to the problem facing MacTara is unfavourable due to the strength and size the company currently holds over the Atlantic region. It does, however, allow the company to avoid the risk of competing overseas with lower quality Russian and Baltic wood products. These products will cut into the profit margins of Mactara. Current capacity should cover overseas pellet contracts but a significant drop in production could lead to legal troubles. With this strategy MacTara has to remain adaptable to current market trends, requiring continuous analysis of the marketplace and acting reactively instead of proactively. Perhaps MacTara decides the industry is too volatile and unpredictable to continue the current volume of production and decides to close its business operations. If the shareholders believe they can create more wealth in a healthier industry they may choose to liquidate the assets of MacTara while the company is still financially healthy. To do so would require: 1. Assess the current market (can we be profitable for three more years) a. Continuing operations for three years and announcing future plans to exit the market or; b. Paying contract fees and exiting market immediately 2. Shutting down operations and laying off the workforce 3. Liquidating assets including new saw, state-of-the-art pellet mill, buildings and the MacTara name Selling the company may be met with hostility but the economic future for the shareholders is protected. MacTara is financially stable and would attract a high price due to its high quality products and strength within the industry. This approach would be considered the safest of all and would only benefit the owners. The external factors facing this industry include political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal aspects. Fortunately for the Canadian softwood lumber industry many of these aspects provide opportunities for success and growth (see exhibit A). Politically, the industry enjoys stability, regulation and tax credits for renewable energy across Canada, the United States and the European Union. The current economic situation is rather bleak and does not show growth due to a low USD, a stagnant construction industry, emerging Chinese/Indian markets and low inflation (possible recession). Canada, although a smaller population, enjoys a bounty of rural workers who expect modest wages. High consumerism in global markets ensures a steady demand of wood products. Technological mature, the lumber industry isn’t expected to see any revolutionary innovations to production. This aspect of maturity is also a benefit to energy customers as their old systems are easily adaptable to wood energy. Environmentally sound practices are essential to the success of a lumber producer and waste must be managed effectively. There are also many legal implications like private ownership, contracts, labour boards for disputes and health and safety initiatives. Because of high profit margins lumber producers are interested in value added wood products (see exhibit B). This creates a threat of new entrants in the pellet and decking/flooring markets that is countered by the large economies of scale that are used to reach such high margins and the large initial investment required to begin production. Lumber is an essential tool/material in construction and is rather hard to find a cost effective substitute. However, the pellet and decking/flooring markets’ substitutes range from wind, solar, oil and coal energy to tile, laminate, composite and hardwood flooring. Our customers and suppliers can’t pressure us with the threat of integration and the larger the mill the more influence over the geographic region. Large mills can provide economic stability to smaller producers of logs and enjoy large profit margins knowing customers cannot create their products on their own. Knowing your competition is essential (see exhibit D). MacTara’s competition depends on which market segment we’re focusing on. Construction lumber is produced in North America and the largest mills are located to the West of the mountains. This ensures our competitive advantage of trade routes to the more densely populated Eastern US. We also have a major port in Halifax for access to the European markets for value added products (see exhibit F). In Europe the competition is tougher as branding is essential. There are endless choices for flooring/decking overseas and we will need the help of Weyerhaeuser to solidify our brand. Baltic and Russian products are soon to enter the market and they have the advantage of trading routes. This is where our competitive advantage of CSR is beneficial. We actively demonstrate business practices that are environmentally friendly and sustainable (see exhibit H). MacTara prides itself in waste management and converts all waste into fuel used on site or pellets to be sold in the marketplace (see exhibit G). With these competitive advantages Mactara should be a staple in both the construction lumber and value added wood products markets for the foreseeable future. Our recommendation for Mactara moving forward is to expand operations, exploiting its competitive advantages in Canada, the US and the EU. Expanding allows for MacTara to become less dependent on the US who has proven to be a strenuous customer as of late. Many companies across the province would appreciate the economic stability that a consolidation/alliance would create for their companies and allow them to focus on producing logs. Increase in production means an increase in by-products and therefore an increase in value added products that create more profit. Re-engineering of the kiln to burn bark should cost roughly $1M Cdn and successful lobbying of the provincial government should yield enough for the remaining cost of the packaging plant to be funded by the remaining $4M Cdn that was received due to unfair duties paid. MacTara should focus on selling pellets to all available markets within Europe (residential, commercial and industrial) and educate customers on the convenience of switching to wood heat and how environmentally friendly and financially viable the option has become. MacTara should have the first-mover mentality as they strive to grab as big a market share as possible. Contingencies are as follows: If international shipping routes cannot be secured do not move ahead with consolidation, re-evaluate the North American marketplace and, most likely, exit the unstable environment. If consolidation cannot be reached then production volumes cannot be assured for expansion, re-evaluate North American marketplace and, most likely, exit the unstable environment. If packaging plant cannot be funded contact local packaging plants and begin outsourcing. Pellets are highly profitable and outsourcing the packaging will still result in profits for MacTara abroad. If considerable market share in Europe is lost to Russian and Baltic wood products production volume will decrease leaving less by-products for conversion to pellets. Immediate exit strategy should be implemented and MacTara assets liquidated to repay any outstanding creditors. Implementation of strategy is essential to the survival of MacTara in the lumber and value added wood product industries. MacTara should not be comfortable with current economic uncertainty and strive for stability through the specific channels available.

Dr. Kings Letter From Birmingham City Jail Essays - Open Letters

Dr. Kings Letter From Birmingham City Jail Essays - Open Letters Daniel Kang Ms. Menard Honors English 8 31 March 2014 Dr. Kings Letter From Birmingham City Jail In the essay Letter from Birmingham City Jail by Martin Luther King Junior inspires and arouses the negroes of Birmingham, Alabama to revolt. He started off with some background knowledge about civil rights and exercising our right to revolt. Also, about the Alabama Christian Movement of Human Rights Organization. King was arrested for civil rights demonstrations on April 16, 1963. I am in Birmingham because injustice is here (Luther 233). He always knew and expressed that violence was never the answer. King states four steps of a non violent campaign. This plan was to help Birmingham one of the most segregated city in the United States. Here are some of the outlines of the plan: In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps:(1) collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive,(2) negotiation,(3) self-purification, (4) direct action. We have gone through all these steps in Birmingham. There can be no gainsaying of the fact that racial injustice engulfs this c ommunity (Luther 234). Martin was a very smart man, he used direct action, but secretly for the use of negotiation. This is the counterexample he uses in the passage to show how even direct action can work in some situations. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and establish such creative tension that a community that has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks to so dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored (Luther 236). Martin Luther King Junior is still known today as a civil rights leader and one of the most famous of them.

Freuds Id, Ego, and Superego Explained

Freud's Id, Ego, and Superego Explained One of Sigmund Freud’s most well-known ideas was his theory of personality, which proposed that the human psyche is composed of three separate but interacting parts: the id, the  ego, and the superego. The three parts develop at different times and play different roles in personality, but work together to form a whole and contribute to an individuals’ behavior.  While the id, ego, and superego are often referred to as structures, they are purely psychological and don’t exist physically in the brain. Key Takeaways: Id, Ego, and Superego Sigmund Freud originated the concepts of the id, the ego, and the superego, three separate but interacting parts of the human personality that work together to contribute to an individuals behavior. While Freud’s ideas have often been critiqued and labeled unscientific, his work continues to be highly influential in the field of psychology. Origins Freud’s work wasn’t based on empirical research, but on his observations and case studies of his patients and others, so his ideas are often viewed with skepticism. Nonetheless, Freud was an enormously prolific thinker and his theories are still considered important. In fact, his concepts and theories are the foundation of psychoanalysis, an approach to psychology thats still studied today. Freud’s personality theory was influenced by earlier ideas about the mind working at conscious and unconscious levels. Freud believed that early childhood experiences are filtered through the id, ego, and superego, and it is the way an individual handles these experiences, both consciously and unconsciously, that shapes personality in adulthood. Id The earliest part of the personality to emerge is the id. The id is present at birth and runs on pure instinct, desire, and need. It is entirely unconscious and encompasses the most primitive part of the personality, including basic biological drives and reflexes. The id is motivated by the pleasure principle, which wants to gratify all impulses immediately. If the ids needs aren’t met, it creates tension. However, because all desires can’t be fulfilled right away, those needs may be satisfied, at least temporarily, through primary process thinking in which the individual fantasizes about what they desire.  Ã‚  Ã‚   Newborns’ behavior is driven by the id- they are concerned only with meeting their needs. And the id never grows up. Throughout life, it remains infantile because, as an unconscious entity, it never considers reality. As a result, it remains illogical and selfish. The ego and the superego develop to keep the id in check. Ego The second part of the personality, the ego, arises from the id. Its job is to acknowledge and deal with reality, ensuring that the id’s impulses are reigned in and expressed in ways that are socially acceptable. The ego operates from the reality principle, which works to satisfy the id’s desires in the most reasonable and realistic ways. The ego may do this by delaying gratification, compromising, or anything else that will avoid the negative consequences of going against society’s norms and rules. Such rational thinking is referred to as secondary process thinking. It’s geared towards problem-solving and reality-testing, enabling the person to maintain self-control. However, just like the id, the ego is interested in seeking pleasure, it just wants to do so in a realistic way. It’s not interested in right and wrong, but in how to maximize pleasure and minimize pain without getting into trouble. The ego operates at conscious, preconscious, and unconscious levels. The ego’s consideration of reality is conscious. However, it may also keep forbidden desires hidden by unconsciously repressing them. Much of the ego’s functioning is also preconscious, meaning it happens below awareness but takes little effort to bring those thoughts into consciousness. Freud initially used the term ego to reference one’s sense of self. Often, when the term is used in everyday conversation- such as when someone is said to have a â€Å"big ego†- its still used in this sense. Yet, the term ego in Freud’s theory of personality is no longer referring to the self-concept but to functions like judgment, regulation, and control. Superego The superego is the final part of the personality, emerging between the ages of 3 and 5, the phallic stage in Freud’s stages of psychosexual development. The superego is the moral compass of the personality, upholding a sense of right and wrong. These values are initially learned from one’s parents. However, the superego continues to grow over time, enabling children to adopt moral standards from other people they admire, like teachers. The superego consists of two components: the conscious and the ego ideal. The conscious is the part of the superego that forbids unacceptable behaviors and punishes with feelings of guilt when a person does something they shouldn’t. The ego ideal, or ideal self, includes the rules and standards of good behavior one should adhere to. If one is successful in doing so, it leads to feelings of pride. However, if the standards of the ego ideal are too high, the person will feel like a failure and experience guilt. The superego not only controls the id and its impulses towards societal taboos, like sex and aggression, it also attempts to get the ego to go beyond realistic standards and aspire to moralistic ones. The superego works at both conscious and unconscious levels. People are often aware of their ideas of right and wrong but sometimes these ideals impact us unconsciously. The Mediating Ego The id, ego, and superego interact constantly. Ultimately, though, it’s the ego that serves as the mediator between the id, the superego, and reality. The ego must determine how to meet the needs of the id, while upholding social reality and the moral standards of the superego. A healthy personality is the result of a balance between the id, ego, and superego. A lack of balance leads to difficulties. If a person’s id dominates their personality, they may act on their impulses without considering the rules of society. This can cause them to spin out of control and even lead to legal troubles. If the superego dominates, the person can become rigidly moralistic, negatively judging anyone who doesn’t meet their standards. Finally if the ego becomes dominant, it can lead to an individual who is so tied to the rules and norms of society that they become inflexible, unable to deal with change, and incapable of coming to a personal concept of right and wrong. Critique Many critiques have been leveled at Freud’s theory of personality. For example, the idea that the id is the dominant component of personality is considered problematic, especially Freud’s emphasis on unconscious drives and reflexes, like the sexual drive. This perspective minimizes and oversimplifies the intricacies of human nature. In addition, Freud believed that the superego emerges in childhood because children fear harm and punishment. However, research has shown that children whose greatest fear is punishment only appear to develop morals- their real motivation is to avoid getting caught and prevent harm. A sense of morality actually develops when a child experiences love and wants to keep it. To do so, they engage in behavior that exemplifies their parents’ morals and, therefore, will gain their approval. Despite these criticisms, Freud’s ideas about the id, the ego, and the superego have been, and continue to be, highly influential in the field of psychology. Econometric Regression Analysis Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Econometric Regression Analysis - Assignment Example The productivity differed from almost wholly effectual to almost entirely unproductive. Outputs regarded consisted of patient days for three age groups. The two techniques generated similar measurements of efficiencies with a single exclusion. The findings from the translog model would generate a standardizing consequence for economies of scale. Therefore, it means that they are general and consistent returns. The DEA exemplar was capable of recognizing cases of both rising and lowering returns. The lowering was discovered for hospitals with augmented quantities of elderly patients. States with a past of civil disagreement or extensive pervasiveness on HIV/AIDS were less effective than other states. Performance was raised with health spending per capita. The researcher is mainly interested in a substantial research of applied numerical and econometric review. This review should use zonal methodology and demographic exchanges, alongside information gathered from collective three-dimen sional departments of observation. This information is normally influenced by a range of measurement issues, ending in three-dimensional reliance and three-dimensional heterogeneity. Nevertheless, a majority of the scientific work did not succeed in considering this crucial aspect of econometrics. In this article, the researchers have tackled the problem of the level to which three-dimensional impacts in practical regression review. An overview of the official technical issues is provided and associated with the literature in three-dimensional econometrics.

Does FIFA bring an economic upturn in countries hosting the world cup Research Paper

Does FIFA bring an economic upturn in countries hosting the world cup - Research Paper Example The transformation in these countries is commonly contributes by increase of tourists visiting the country, sufficient infrastructures, security as well as the boost of morale brought by the good feeling of hosting the World Cup (Crnelissen, 2014). Additionally, FIFA also generated billions during the World Cup, some of which the hosting country gets as tax revenue. For example, by the end of 2010 the organization had generated 4.189 billion dollars and addition 3.6 billion dollars from World cup not directly related to world Cup (FIFA, 2007). This explains the fierce competition in the bids for the opportunity to host the World Cup. Currently, even the developing countries are actively bidding for the chance. Could this be as a result of the economical development that has been recorded in the host countries before? This makes one wonder the worth of world Cup to the nation hosting it. The purpose of the study, therefore, is to identify whether the host country’s economy benefits from the World Cup. In this case, the research question can be phrased as follows â€Å"Does FIFA bring an economic upturn in countries hosting the world cup?† The answer to this question is outlined in this paper by concentrating on some of the most significant economic aspects that greatly contribute to the growth of a country (Andreff, 2012). The paper further relates these aspects to the World Cup and the impact it has on them. The paper is divided into three sections. The first one is a theoretical framework that outlines the definition of economical terminologies, concepts, the scope and criteria of study analysis. The second section is the methodology of presenting the study while the third section describes the findings of the study. In this section, the paper proposes four major economic indicators, which are used to determine the upturn or downturn of an economy. Further, FIFA’s impact on the economy will be defined from

Wuthering Heights by Silvia Plath Essay Example for Free

Wuthering Heights by Silvia Plath Essay  «Wuthering Heights » is a poem written by an American poet Sylvia Plath and is based on a novel of the same name by Emily Bronte. In order to convey her internal feelings of despair and disappointment, Sylvia uses a certain tone, structure, and a number of stylistic devises. Below is a descriptive analysis of how she manages to do so, and an interpretation of a poem’s meaning stanza by stanza. From the beginning of the first line, Sylvia Plath sets a depressive and negative tone to her poem. The horizons ring me like faggots†- is the first line of the poem, and yet it already suggests how desolate the place from where she looks at them is. With the use of personification â€Å"ring me† she creates an aural image of ringing, which enhances the solitude she experiences, as ears tend to ring in a silent place. Horizons are â€Å"titled and disparate†, where the word â€Å"disparate† echoes the word â€Å"despair†, in its turn implying that she is in a desperate emotional state. Through using a metaphor â€Å"touched by a match†, referring to the horizons, and saying that â€Å"they might warm me†, she not only acknowledges the reader of the coldness she feels, but also expresses hope that the horizons might warm her. However, the hope soon dissolves, along with the horizons in the last two lines of the poem- â€Å"But they only dissolve and dissolve, Like a series of promises, as I step forward†. Through repetition she enhances the bitterness she feels from the disappointment, and compares the warmth that was neglected to her, to the promises that were made to her but were never kept. The enjambment of the sentence structure between the last two lines is another proof to the possible connection between the horizons and promises. Such connection might mean that it is her allusion to her husband- a poet Ted Hughes that has not been loyal to her despite the vows given during their marriage. With the use of the word â€Å"me†, the readers become aware of the fact that Sylvia writes it in the first person inclusive and describes her own experience, which in its turns raises their feeling of compassion towards her and once again suggests that this poem might have been dedicated to her ex husband. With the following second stanza the tone of the poem becomes more depressing. By saying that â€Å"there is no life higher than the grasstops or the hearts of sheep†, she creates boundaries to the vastness of life, limiting and comparing its essence to that of a plant’s and an animal’s, leaving the humans out of the poem. The depressive mood degrades the tone and atmosphere to an extent of filling it with death and fatality. If Sylvia pays â€Å"the roots of the heather too close attention†, they will â€Å"whiten her bones among them†. The combination of the words â€Å"bones† and â€Å"white† in one sentence might suggest that the roots will bring her death; since the skin of a corpse turns white due to the lack of blood, and bones are the leftovers of a dead hence both are associated with mortality. As opposed to the first stanza, the second stanza takes her to a completely different place. Grasstops, sheep, the roots of heather- all surround her, whereas in the first stanza she is completely alone in a huge desolate space. The change in her surroundings suggests her movement across the moorland, but at the same time it points out the maintenance of her demoralized emotional state and the lack of a positive change about it. The tone of despair and loneliness is carried on to the proceeding stanzas, and is more evident in the last two. By saying that â€Å"Water limpid as the solitudes that flee through my fingers†, Sylvia shows the reader her abstract idea of being alone with the help of a consonance- â€Å"as- solitude† and â€Å"flee- fingers†. The â€Å"s† sound helps the reader imagine the literal hardness of solitude, as well as its transparency by being able to flow through her fingers with the â€Å"f† sounds. This in its turn indicates solitude’s double nature and Sylvia’s inability to neither control nor change it. In lines four and five Sylvia for the first time creates an image of nothing being straight- â€Å"hollow doorsteps go from grass to grass; lintel and sill have unhinged themselves†. By using the repetition â€Å"grass to grass†, she mimics the slowness of doorsteps’ steps, and personifies the doorsteps by giving them the ability to go. She also uses personification to describe how lintel and sill unhinge themselves, which once again reflects upon the presence of chaos and despair in her surroundings. By mentioning doorsteps, hinges and sills, she for the first time acknowledges the existence of humans in the past, and their current absence from the world that has been taken over by nature. The removal of all people but herself from the world not only enhances the bitterness she feels towards them, but also marks her egocentric nature as she is not willing to accept any advanced living thing but herself, preferring the nature instead. The fourth stanza ends with a repetition of the words â€Å"black stone, black stone†. As the air blows, Sylvia creates an aural image of the air moaning those words with the repetition technique, which slows down the speed of their pronouncement. At the same time, the air therefore is personified as it is given the ability to speak. This emphasizes the death and coldness present during the absence of life not only around her but also within her, as she is the only person that can hear the air say it. In the fifth, the final stanza of the poem the tone remains depressing and yet the ending suggests the possible appearance of hope. The paragraph begins with the reinforced idea of Sylvia being the only â€Å"upright† living thing- â€Å"The sky leans on me, me, the one upright among all horizontals†. Besides personifying the sky, she is also using the repetition â€Å"me, me† to stress the importance of being upright, and at the same time the solitude it brings her when everything else is horizontal. She then personifies the grass as it is â€Å"beating its head distractedly†, but it is also a contradiction since grass ought to be strong in order to survive in such cruel conditions. The fact that a grass beats its head may also reflect Sylvia’s unstable state of mind, which adds the feelings of compassion and grief to the atmosphere of the tone. Unlike other personifications that Sylvia Plath uses in this poem, the personification of a grass suggests her sympathy and familiarity towards it. She calls it â€Å"too delicate for a life in such company†, assuming that â€Å"darkness terrifies it†. This involvement with the description of what grass has to go through may imply that Sylvia describes her own life whilst comparing its hardship to that of a grass. The last two sentences are significant in a sense that Sylvia gives the reader a chance to decide whether the hope appears or does not. With the use of sibilance â€Å"black as†, she contrasts the blackness with the whiteness from the â€Å"light† that the house exerts. This is the first time she mentions the possible existence of human beings around her, and this raises hope as the â€Å"lights gleam like a small change† in the dreadful and dark surroundings. However, the presence of light may also mean that the rest of the world has fallen into absolute darkness, and the small light in the distance will soon die under its pressure. According to facts Sylvia Plath has committed suicide on February 11th, 1963 and this is when both interpretations undergo amalgamation to suggest that she may have had space for hope in her heart, but in reality her life was oppressing her to an extent of leading her life to a tragic end. According to the above analysis, the poem is written in the first person narrative where Sylvia gives a vivid image of her life hrough using literary devices to set the tone of despair and loneliness. Personally, I think Sylvia Plath communicates her internal troubles intensely and passionately. Through the description of landscape, the action of nature within it, the roles of colour and light- she is able to paint a picture of her life clearly enough for the reader to understand her message, and yet she disguises some aspects of the poem through imagery and metaphors to let the reader interpret and relate to the poem in a personal way. By introducing light into the poem, Sylvia twists the ending and confuses the reader, forcing him to reconsider his assumptions regarding the poem’s tone, meaning and the resolution. In case of Sylvia Plath’s life, the hope is lost in the end of it and annihilation takes over. However, because the poem lacks any names and includes the reader into it with the word â€Å"me†, the reader is left with his own imagination to decide whether the tone and the resolution take on a positive note, or fall into a greater despair.

Optics :: essays research papers

Aim: To examine characteristics of a converging lens and the images they create. Also to examine the focal length and how the focus point may be found and developing rules for locating an image via ray drawings and the intersection of rays. Chromatic aberration will also be explored and why it happens. Theory: Both lenses and mirrors have a principle axis, yet a lens has two focal points as opposed to a mirror that has only one. When considering converging lenses, the primary focal point (PF) can be found on the opposite side of the lens in regards to the light. The secondary focal point (SF) being on the same side as the light source. Focus points on thin double convex lenses are located at either side of the lens, measured from the middle of the lens itself (see below). Chromatic aberration is a problem of converging lenses that will also be explored in this experiment. A description of each image produced will also be given (attitude, type, magnification and location). Apparatus: The main tools (apparatus) used in the experiment consist of a ray box containing cards which allow one, two, three or four rays onto a sheet of paper at a time so that rays path from the box to the mirror will be able to be traced. Also two (2) different types of converging lenses, one being cylindrical while the other being spherical, the difference being that the spherical one is used for viewing, the cylindrical one for use with the ray box. These lenses are one of many different sorts of lenses in the "lens box". The use of a ruler would also be helpful so that accurate measurements may be taken. Method: 1. A cylindrical lens was placed on paper and traced around, a principal axis was drawn making sure that it's at rights angles to the lens. The ray box was switched on (exposing only one ray) and lined up parallel to the principle axis, a mark where the ray leaves the box was made as well as where it hits the lens (on both sides) and where the ray bisects the principle axis. After this, the ray box was removed and using a ruler, rays were accurately drawn. The focus point (f) was measured to be of length 7.3cm (7.25). 2. The lens was replaced back on a sheet of paper with ray box emitting three rays, the middle ray lined up on the principle axis, marks were made where the ray's intersected at on the principle axis and this was measured to be the primary focus point.

Personal Response on Sexuality Identity Essay

* Relate value systems and critical thinking to your sexual decision making before and after this course. * Describe the effect of environment and historical perspectives on your sexuality. * Discuss the development of your gender identity. * Analyze the effect of attraction and love in your relationships. * Discuss another topic of this course that is interesting and useful to you. Relate this topic to your life. When I first started this class I had no idea of what I was in for and then the first class took me back to when I was a young girl and had no clue about what I wanted or who. I never thought about boys much when I was in school and that made think maybe I was different than other girls, because they dated and I didn’t, was there something wrong with me or was I just waiting until I met the right person. I now know that I was just waiting for the right guy and the right time to even think about sex.I have learned in this class that even though I am not confused now that back then it was a normal thing to be confused and wonder if I was different. Back when I was young the fear of being different was about the only thing that we ever had to face (besides getting pregnant), I was raised Catholic and being different was and still is frowned upon, so when I would talk to my mother she would simply tell me that my body wasn’t ready and now after this class I can see that what she said was right, my body and my mind wasn’t ready to make that choice and when it was I knew what I wanted. That is still what a lot of the youth today have to face and understand, if their bodies are ready they have to make sure that they understand everything that goes along with being sexually active. The biggest thing that helped me understand my sexuality is that I grew up watching â€Å"Little House† and my parent’s, and also my grandparent’s. These things made me realize that I was meant to be with a man and to love only one person for life. I know that before I started dating I thought at one time that maybe I was meant to be with a girl not a boy, but then I went to church more often and after reading the bible (a lot) I was to be with a man if I wanted to be part of my family.  Even today if I was to be with a woman not my husband my family would never talk to me again. That is a lot for one person to have to deal with and that is what a lot of people have to deal with on a daily basis. I believe that if you want to be with the same sex then you should do what is going to make you happy, not everyone around you. In history if you laid down with the same sex as you everyone thought that you had something wrong with you and wanted you locked up, to make you change. I never wanted to be a problem for anyone, so I choose to do the right thing and go along with what everyone in my Catholic family told me that I should be like. I don’t regret it, but sometimes wonder if I gave in to easily and was too scared to be different. History has not been kind to people who are different and the same goes for people these days, if you’re different than them then they want to change you and make you like them. I was always told that I would go to hell if I ever even thought about women the way I was to think about a man, today I tell my daughters that if a women can make them happy and not hurt them then go ahead, I wish that that had been said to me. When I first started to date me only went out with people that I knew my parents wanted me to date, I never thought about being attracted to them or even interested in them. I know that being attracted to someone is one of the most important things when thinking of going out with them, but sometimes people do it (have sex) without thinking about it or any feeling at all. That is what I did for a long time and that took me some time to realize that I was onl y hurting myself and the men didn’t care why I was doing it. When I first fell in love with my husband we weren’t even dating, I met him at my sister’s and felt my heart beat faster every time he was around, that made me want to change for the better and the more I thought about him the more I wanted to be with only him. I know that love doesn’t always happen when you want it to or for whom you want, but it does happen. People I think need to be patient and kind to others and learn that putting yourself out there (so to speak) is the only way that you will realize that someone can love you and once you know that and learn to love yourself in spite of everything that has happened in the past, love is a wonderful thing and so is just being attracted to someone. Just knowing that my husband is going to be there no matter what I do or say gives me the sense of self that I can’t control. The topic that hit home really hard for me during this class was: Sexual Abuse  of Children. This hits home on two different levels, first I was abused as a child by my uncle and my grandfather. No one believed me and I felt completely alone and scared all the time. I do believe that this was one big factor on me not knowing who I was or what I wanted when I was the dating age (as my mother would say), I wouldn’t look or talk to any of the boys and got into fights with the girls, I always tried not to be home when my uncle had to watch us, but it never worked. So I ran away and that was when I started talking to someone who could help me deal with all the feeling that I was having. It took me (what seemed like forever) some time and at times even today I think about it and just want to cry, I still to this day don’t have anything to do with that uncle and never have forgiven him and never let him around any of my daughter’s. The second reason for this topic is that my daughter was raped when she was 15 and that brought up all of the feelings that I had as a young girl. I did everything that I could, I got her counseling and we pressed charges against the man who did it to her. She is doing some what alright, except she only wants to date a lot older men and started being sexually active shortly after that happened to her, she still has night terrors over it, but is getting the help that she needs and is talking more about it which is one of the best ways of dealing with childhood trauma. After taking this class my daughters and I are a lot closer because we talked about my assignments every week and they seem to want to talk to me more about what is going on with them. I never really talked to my mother about what I was feeling and that did more harm than good in my eyes. No day’s you have to be open and honest with young people and then maybe they will want to be open with you. Telling my girls that no matter what is going on with them I will always be there for them is the best thing that I could do for them. If there was one thing that I could change about the way that my thinking was before this class, it would be to be more open minded about things that I wonder about, like how can someone who has been with a man/women all there life’s change and flip it.I mean that I was always confused as to how someone would be gay,bi,and how did they know without a dought in their minds. I never really had any friends that were not straight and this class helped open my eye’s as to maybe why someone would be the way that they are without passing a bad thought about it.I’m really glad that I had the chance to get to know myself a little bit  better and understand a few other things that had me wondering.

Bridgeton Industries: Automotive Component and Fabrication Plant Essay

In 1985, Bridgeton Industries, a major supplier to Big-Three domestic automobile manufacturers, is facing a competitive environment with advent of foreign competition and rising gasoline prices, leading to shrinking pool of production contracts. Bridgeton reacts by closing ACF diesel engine plant and hiring strategic consulting firm to classify their products on competitive position. Based on analysis, Bridgeton outsourced oil pans and muffler exhaust (classified as Class 3) and introduced programs, such as lowering time required to change dies, to improve product, quality and productivity. However, despite of these measures, manifolds were downgraded from Class II to Class III in 1990 model year budget. Now, Bridgeton faces the challenge to decide if manifolds be outsourced and, more importantly, what more to do (in terms of strategy) to keep the business? Bridgeton’s Organization: †¢ Cost System: It comprises of materials, direct labor and overhead. Per Exhibit 2, during period 1987-90, the overhead rates have increased as shown below; especially after outsourcing in 1988. With outsourcing, the overhead cost have not reduced at same rate as labor cost, leading to higher costs for the remaining products such as manifolds. Thereby, outsourcing manifolds shall lead to higher cost for the remaining products such as fuel tanks and doors and shall push them down to Class III. †¢ Revenue and Profit: Outsourcing manifolds will reduce cost; however, the sales will be reduced even more, since Bridgeton’s highest revenue is from Manifolds, which account for 41% ($93,120/$226,542) of their total sales in 1990, leading to lower profit. Business Market: With higher efficiency standards, demand for stainless steel manifolds such as those produced at ACF could be increased dramatically and so, probably, would their selling prices. This will lead higher revenue and profits from sales of manifolds (if not outsourced); assuming no significant increase in the cost (material). Therefore, outsourcing Class III manifolds (per Consulting Firm’s recommendation) shall not be advantage for the ACF plant. Clearly, reduction in plant production volume and high overhead cost has caused ACF plant to be less cost competitive. Recommendations: Following are the recommendation to utilize ACF plant resources efficiently and thus, improve overhead rates for existing products: †¢ Increase technology capability, thereby, increasing production of existing products †¢ Use Activity Based Costing (ABC) to actually analyze the individual cost incurred for these products and opportunity for its reduction †¢ Initiate reforms in manufacturing and admin process  Ã¢â‚¬ ¢ Sell un-used outdated machinery that are causing big depreciation and insurance cost †¢ Promote cost-cutting but preserving quality †¢ Set budgets and review them on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Through this we can utilize overhead expenses more efficiently and allocate it amongst current products to be cost competitive and keep the pricing within reasonable limits, helping us to maintain our profitability and market shares.

Best Deicer Types and How to Use

Best Deicer Types and How to Use The best deicer is the non-chemical backbreaking solution... the snow shovel. However, proper use of a chemical deicer can ease your battle with snow and ice. Note that I said proper use since a big issue with deicers is that they are used incorrectly. You want to use the minimum amount of product needed to loosen the snow or ice and then remove it with a shovel or plow, not cover the surface with deicer and wait for the salt to completely melt the snow or ice. Which product you use depends on your specific needs. Back in ye olden days, regular salt or sodium chloride was the usual choice for deicing roads and sidewalks. Now there are several deicer options, so you can choose the best deicer for your situation. The Transportation Research Board offers a tool to help you compare 42 deicer options based on price, environmental impact, temperature limit for melting snow or ice, and the infrastructure needed to use the product. For personal home or business use, youll probably see only a few different products on the market, so heres a summary of some of the pros and cons of the common deicers: Sodium chloride (rock salt or halite) Sodium chloride is inexpensive and helps keep moisture from accumulating on roads and walkways, but it is not an effective deicer at low temperatures [only good down to -9Â °C (15Â °F)], damages concrete, poisons the soil, and can kill plants and harm pets. Calcium chloride Calcium chloride works at very low temperatures and isnt as damaging to the soil and vegetation as sodium chloride, though it costs a bit more and may damage concrete. Calcium chloride attracts moisture, so it wont keep surfaces as dry as many other products. On the other hand, attracting moisture can be a good quality since calcium chloride releases heat when it reacts with water, so it can melt snow and ice on contact. All deicers must be in solution (liquid) in order to start working; calcium chloride can attract its own solvent. Magnesium chloride can do this too, though it isnt used as commonly as a deicer. Safe Paw This is an amide/glycol mixture rather than a salt. It is supposed to be safer for plants and pets than salt-based deicers, though I dont know much about it otherwise, except that it is more expensive than salt. Potassium chloride Potassium chloride doesnt work at extremely low temperatures and may cost a little more than sodium chloride, but it is relatively kind to vegetation and concrete. Corn-based products These products (e.g., Safe Walk) contain chlorides and work in very low temperatures, yet are supposed to be safe for yards and pets. They are expensive. CMA or calcium magnesium acetate CMA is safe for concrete and plants, but it is only good down to the same temperature as sodium chloride. CMA is better at preventing water from re-freezing than at melting snow and ice. CMA tends to leave a slush, which may be undesirable for sidewalks or driveways. Deicer Summary As you would imagine, calcium chloride is a popular low-temperature deicer. Potassium chloride is a popular warmer-winter choice. Many deicers are mixtures of different salts so that you get some of the advantages and disadvantages of each chemical.

Career Management And Professional Development Education Essay

While my chief fortes may still lie in either fiscal or direction accounting, Appendix 1[ 1 ]shows the many other possible paths that I could take. Many of the companies that fall under these classs will be based in London particularly those affecting investing markets, nevertheless there are plentifulness of possibilities to work non merely across the U.K but besides the remainder of the universe. Equally good as looking at Graduate occupations, one other measure frontward is to go a hired comptroller. Again from looking at Appendix 1 within the UK there are seven cardinal hired bureaus. However fall ining one of these will hold to happen after I have started my calling in order to cognize which one to fall in. For illustration if I wanted a calling in revenue enhancement I would take the CIOT over CIMA. After sourcing the occupations that my making leads me to make, it ‘s now a simple instance of combating the 300,000 other alumnuss each twelvemonth for precisely the same occupation. One manner to give me a contending opportunity at the occupation is by acquiring noticed and as a consequence I will necessitate to convey a whole scope of accomplishments and competences to the tabular array to demo why I should acquire the occupation.
